I just ran across an article about Fiat opening a “dedicated secondhand car outlet” to remarket ex-fleet vehicles in the U.K. It’s like a franchise used-car dealership. Sure, if you’re looking for a specific used vehicle, you can sometimes find one that was traded in at a new-car dealership. But Fiat’s plan is for a centralized location with a huge inventory of ex-fleet cars. Might something like that work in the U.S.? Could manufacturers try it with off-lease vehicles, as well?
This is different from the "auto mall" concept in that it offers vehicles from one nameplate, correct? It seems as though the "auto mall" model works pretty well here. I am not clear why this would be better.
I think an auto mall is more like a collection of franchise dealers. In other words, you might have a dozen franchises in the same location or on the same street. Essentially, though, each is a regular dealership. What I'm talking about is a single franchise that sells only one manufacturer's vehicles. Instead of having 300 new Toyotas and 20 used Toyotas on the lot, this dealership would have 300 used Toyotas that were either ex-fleet or off-lease vehicles.
